The Debt the Doormat eBook Laura Barnard
Poppy and Jazz are best friends - Poppy is the responsible one with the steady job and the early bedtime. Jazz is the one with no reliable income who likes to live it up out on the town and has gotten herself into a money situation. They decide to 'switch lives' to hopefully make some of Poppy rub off on Jazz. What Poppy didn't expect was for Jazz to also rub off on her. This book had me laughing out loud all the way through, even spitting water all over my keyboard at work and doing a full belly laugh while I was standing in the kitchen making supper because I couldn't put it down, oops. :) The best part was that you could be reading a part that is fairly serious and end up laughing hysterically - I loved that because I needed a book that was light-hearted and fun without a lot of the heavy drama. It was a very refreshing read. The author has a writing style that made me become immediately invested in the characters and their lives. In an odd way Poppy is very relatable for me - she tends to be a bad luck charm for herself on the daily and as I am very clumsy and attract mishaps, I found myself laughing with her and not at her.
I am a fan of this author and am moving right on to the next book in this laugh out loud series.......

The Debt the Doormat eBook Laura Barnard Reviews
If you need a good laugh, check out this book. "The Debt and The Doormat" is British author Laura Barnard's first book. This light-hearted story of two female roommates book will make you laugh. Poppy and Jazz, the two main characters, are polar opposites. In order for Jazz to pay off her debt, she convinces Poppy to swap houses, since Poppy's rent is cheaper than Jazz'. Poppy, the typical "doormat" goes along with her unconventional scheme. The typical British humor is very dry and funny and all of the characters are well fleshed out. Poppy's character is well developed, as the reader sees a change in her at the end of the story. Laura Barnard's writing is excellent - funny and entertaining. I can't wait to read the rest of her books. I would highly recommend this book for an entertaining read.
I'm not even sure where to begin. This is probably the longest book I've read in ages. Or at least if felt like it. It took me quite a while to get in to the story and characters, but eventually (and somewhat surprisingly to me) I did. Poppy is like a walking bad luck charm and I have never seen so much crap happen to one person. You expect it at every turn, and it happens at every turn, but eventually it just became too much for me and slowed the story down. It was just too long. That said, I did like the relationship between Poppy and Ryan and I did keep reading because I wanted to see what happened, even as Ryan's emotions flip flopped just as often as Poppy's. The cast of characters in this story is fun and create some crazy moments along the way. If the story had been paired down, I think I could have really enjoyed it. There is just too much happening for me. Not to mention, the romance is so slow to bloom, I kept watching the percentage climb higher and higher wondering if anything would indeed happen. The end is rushed but I think the sequel holds all the details. I will give it a try to see what craziness continues with Poppy and Ryan and because it appears to focus a bit more on Jazz (and hopefully Ollie) as well.
As a new blogger, I was approached by the author to review her new release The Baby & the Bride which is a sequel to The Debt & the Doormat. To learn the back story of her latest release, I immediately began reading her first story about Poppy Windsor and her agreement to help her best friend, Jazz Green, out of debt and help Jazz gain some life stability.
Little did she know how much this new arrangement of swapping lives would affect her instead. An honest to goodness people pleaser, Poppy gets herself into numerous sticky situations because she's constantly trying to avoid hurting anyone's feelings causing some very funny outcomes.
I can't tell you how many times I was asked what I was reading because I was laughing out loud during breaks at work, at the store or even at a concert while I waited for it the band to set up. More recently, I was explaining the book to my sister on our road trip to the Austin Book Fest and even the couple scenes I explained to her had us both full on belly laughing in the car.
Laura Bernard did a wonderful job with this story. Not only did I laugh at Poppy's predicaments but I felt like I could totally relate to what she was feeling and why she did the things she did. Ultimately, Poppy learns a lot about herself and becomes a stronger person for it.
This is a great story for when you're getting over the ultimate book hangover and need some comedy relief. I five it 4 stars. Go ahead and one-one click. The book is currently a freebie and I don't how long that will last. It's definitely one for your kindle library.
I asked my book buddies to recommend a funny book because I was sick in bed and needed a lift. This is what they told me to read. What a treasure! And lift my spirits it did. I am an Aussie, so the British humor is just up my alley, it's very dry and extremely funny. I was laughing out loud so many times, I nearly spilt my tea!
I just loved Poppy. She is a Bridget Jones type character that unfortunately bad luck follows her everywhere she goes. And it is hilarious. She has a BFF in Jazz who is her polar opposite, but just as funny. Jazz has the idea to swap houses, so she can save money to pay off her debt. Poppy is not totally convinced, but being a "doormat", she goes along with it. Jazz's flat mates, Grace, Izzy and Ryan are a bit shocked, but accept her into their fold. Crazy things will keep you entertained with this book. Some will think the relationship with Poppy and Ryan is a bit annoying, but I didn't. I felt that Poppy was the one who was unsure and gave mixed signals to poor Ryan. But alls well, that ends well, and this finishes brilliantly.
I would highly recommend this book for an entertaining read.
