Covert operations are an intelligence operation that is carried clandestinely and, often, outside of official channels. Covert operations aim to fulfill their mission objectives without any parties knowing who sponsored or carried out the operation.
Clandestine Activity is surreptitious or secret activity undertaken by professional organizations on behalf of governments or conspirational groups only when overt means are inadequate or not possible to acquire such information.

The CIA Guide to Clandestine Operations eBook Varangian Enterprises Reviews
Excellent Read.
Great book. Has lots of good information on the CIA's clandestine operations.
very comprehensive.
As a former Special Forces Team Leader and a Military Intelligence Officer, I confess this book to be "A quick review" of Clandestine Ops. Still, if a civilian or someone not exposed to advance C.O. tactics and techniques, this book will aid your understanding toward these types of operations. It is hardly classified intell on training but is sufficient to build a conversant understanding. A good read as well!
If you have read books like Spycraft The Secret History of the CIA's Spytechs, from Communism to Al-Qaeda or The Master of Disguise My Secret Life in the CIA you may be expecting something that tells a story and how stuff is used.
This is not that. This is basically a field manual. It reads like a list of considerations. It is dry. It is sterile. It's like a wall of text that you use for planning an operation. It is not fun to read.
That being said, it is good and thorough. If you read this after reading other books on the CIA, or any intelligence agency, you will definitely recognize techniques, and if you read books after it, you will have an understanding of the thinking of the authors.
Don’t waste your money on this “book”, and don’t waste your time reading it if you somehow manage to get your hands on a copy for free. The “Look Inside” book preview makes it seem like you are getting a crash course in clandestine operations direct from Camp Peary, VA. However, you’re getting anything but an insider’s look with this “book”. You’re being hoodwinked instead of educated on the craft of intelligence. Take it from someone who had to force himself to read this entire “book” from cover to cover, wincing at every spelling, grammatical, and formatting error. This book reads like it was written by a non-native English speaker, which it might very well have been IF it was taken from CIA training materials that had first been translated into a foreign language, and then translated back again into English for our reading displeasure. But since the author couldn’t be bothered to put his or her name on this “book”, I have my doubts about that.
On top of the misspellings, word salad, and other hallmarks of a slapdash job, this book makes strong use of that perennial favorite of the hack writer and lazy student alike who have nothing to say but pages and pages to fill… endless lists. Half this book is just pages of lists… useless and repetitive lists. The hacky, slapdash nature of this book reminds me strongly of the garbage put out by the infamous Paladin Press of Boulder, CO. Seeing as how the publisher of this book, an unknown outfit called Varangian Press, is located close by in Denver, perhaps that’s not a coincidence at all.
There are much, much better non-fiction books available on the subject of clandestine intelligence operations. Most have been written by retired operatives and knowledgeable journalists who know the subject intimately and have a good command of the English language. These writers also take the time to proofread their own work before publishing it. One great book that comes to mind is ‘Thwarting Enemies at Home and Aboard How to Be a Counterintelligence Officer’ by William R. Johnson, a retired (and now deceased) CIA officer. Mr. Johnson discusses the theory and practice of counterintelligence with dry humor and a keen insight into world of intelligence tradecraft. He is a very decent writer, and like all great books, you will not have to force yourself to finish it. “Thwarting Enemies…” is a book that is truly worthy of your time and money.
I can't tell you why, .....I was just expecting more. The CIA Clandestine Operations book doesn't even tell you what to expect from people trying to penetrate your organization. Very low on the security scale in terms of protecting ourselves from this organization. Eh, every little bit helps.
If this book is authored by a CIA employee, god help us.
I returned the book.
