Hawkeye, an outsized Maine Coon cat with extra toes, found life rather dull at MerryMaines Cattery--until he rescued an elfin, uppity Korat princess from a raging Penobscot River.
Bhu Fan, whose paws had never touched anything but velvet before her ordeal in North Central Maine, had some stoutly resisted adjustments to make among MerryMaines shaggy denizens, whom she saw as mere tarted-up barn cats, their cattery full of rosettes and ribbons notwithstanding.
It took a stolen truckload of Corvettes, Bhu's near-fatal encounter with a Great Barred Owl, a house fire and the theft of MerryMaines most famous sire to earn Bhu Fan acceptance as a card-carryin' member of the clan--with a bit of help from Hawkeye, his clever 'thumbs' and cattery owner Beth Merriman's rout of Bhu's larcenous former owner.

Mrs Quinn, There are novelists, writers, poets, etc. You are truly a MASTER story teller. I am reading the series for the fifth time. How do you come up with the plots and weave your stories so beautifully? The characters-both feline and human are rich and diverse. Thank you for giving me so m any hours of entertainment. Of course, I love cats. I did show in Premiership years ago in CFA. It was my little hobby. I am still owned by two kitties, one is a black Maine Coon called Ben and the other is a short hair red spotted tabby named Tigger. They are my family. Thank you. Please write another. Oh yes, my 4.5 pound dog, Mini Pearl, would not forgive me if I left her out. The cats let her burrow under the covers and the lie on her like a hot pad. Thank you once again.Product details

The Merry Maines A Shaggy cat Story edition by Garnet Quinn Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
Imagine Oscar and Felix as felines. That is what we have here in this fun tale of thrills, chills and spills. Hawkeye and Bhu Fan are oil and water, but together they are quite the pair. Who would think two cats could take on car thieves or cat-nappers? But they do, and succeed quite handsomely. This ought to be movie.
Highly recommend this for any cat lover but esp those who love the Maine Coon
Ms Quinn is a natural raconteur. Her story keeps you reading and entertained. I own a couple of Maine Coons, and she has their personality traits down. But her ability to characterize doesn't stop with the cats. She's also able to capture humans with equal skill. There's just one itty bitty problem with her writing, and it's my feeling that, if she corrects it, she will sell to publishers and not have to self-publish, even though I understand she's going for a niche market. Just a little bit of work at establishing point of view will raise this book to a 5. Nonetheless, I will certainly recommend this book to friends and family. It is a fun and friendly read.
I don't read much for entertainment, but I devoured this book in just a few days. I love cats, I've always wanted to visit Maine, and now I wish this were not a fiction book! I want to go visit the Merry Maines cattery and meet these cool cats!
There was one section that dragged a little, when one of the cats is retelling some cat mythology/ancestral lineage. But all the rest of it is well-paced and fun to read. I learned a lot about the cat breeding industry, cat shows, and the beautiful state of Maine.
This is not a book for children. It is written at an adult reading level, and there are a LOT of references to the act of breeding.
As an eccentric writer (author-KHANA Maine Coon) and reader, who loves books from the nonhuman point of view, this book attracted me immediately when I learned the main character is a Maine Coon cat. I have owned five of these wonderful cats in my life, two of which still rule our home. Hawkeye and Bhu, and all the others, are wonderful characters who captured me from the first sentence. Without giving anything away I can say this is a fun and delightful read any cat lover would enjoy, and for those of us that know and love Maine Coon cats--it is spot on! I have no idea why I never found this book before now, and I only found it when checking up on my own book about a Maine Coon, and saw it as a suggestion to buy! I am thrilled I did so and have bought the remainder in the series. I look forward to each and every word!
What a great discovery! A wonderful cat action/adventure story that does a terrific job of portraying cats and people as individual characters with distinct personalities, but without getting either too cutesy or too mushy. There are plenty of emotional peaks and depths here but nowhere does the writing get cloying, or dwell on gloom-and-doom, or let even the happy ending get maudlin.
Other reviewers have given details of the plot -- uppity "princess" Korat gets rescued by "peasant" Maine Coon, learns to co-exist with the Maine Coon community, definitely holds her own in their adventures, and cats and their humans eventually foil the villains. This author does the cat dialog even better and makes it sound even more natural than Rita Mae Brown does with Mrs. Murphy and her friends.
I don't agree with one reviewer who thinks this book should be a movie -- no, no, don't ruin it! Movies are infamous for messing with books so that the books are practically unrecognizable in the finished product.
I hope this book sells well enough to earn the author a better publisher for future books -- a publisher who can afford a good proofreader. Oh, heck, I'm an editor, I'll volunteer to proofread her next book myself!
So -- I look forward to more adventures of Hawkeye, Bhu Fan, Beowulf, Shere Khan and the rest of the gang. I'll read them curled up on the couch with my 21-pound brown tabby part-Maine Coon, Farinelli, on the arm of the couch giving me purrs, face-rubs and head-butts while his two part-Persian adopted siblings occupy the rest of the couch. Life doesn't get any better than being surrounded by cats.
I found this book and the series by reading reviews on the current few novals of Rita Mae Brown, her Mrs Murphy series. I had been disappointed with the last few books as instead of following the sluthing of the animals and Harry they tended to tell me what the author thought about world events. If I wanted that I would read a political thriller or something about the mess we are currently in. I WANT ESCAPE!!! One of the reviewers said that Garnet Quinn had the animals talk too and that she did a better job. And she does!
This is the first in the series and it is well written. It is a fun read!
You find out a lot about cat shows and how Garnet thinks the cats think about them. The little Korat in the story is just the right amount of spice to the Main Cat. I hope the rest of the series tells us more about shows and what goes on there. I wonder if they have the same kind of interesting people that show up at dog shows...
If there is a down side to this story it is that it made me want a REAL Main Coon Cat!
I wonder if the Main Coon Cat is the basis for Ann McCafferty's cats in her books? Does anyone know?
